摘要:When we arrived in Heyuan,we were immediately attracted to its rich Hakka culture and to the incredible fossilized dinosaur eggs dating from the late Cretaceous Period some 65 million years ago displayed at the city museum. We were also amazed at the long history of one of its counties:Longchuan dates back to 210 B.C. It is believed that the First Emperor,in order to pacify the south, had appointed Zhao Tuo(d.137 B.C.)as magistrate of Longchuan. Zhao Tuo had written to the First Emperor to send 30000 ladies as clothes-menders for the soldiers in the Longchuan garrison. The First Emperor eventually sent 15000 women, and they were married to the soldiers who, with their husbands, became the earliest Han settlers in Heyuan. They were also Hakka(guest people)in a broad sense. In this regard, the history of Longchuan is more than 2000 years old. Yet,it is difficult if not impossible to link the Longchuan of today to Longchuan at the time of the First Emperor. Longchuan in Qin covered a large area including today’s Heyuan and Wuhua,Xingning,Xinfeng, and Lufeng in Guangdong as well as Xunwu and Dingnan in Jiangxi. As the historian Tan Yuanheng said,“Even though there were 138 surnames and 48 old lineage halls in today’s Longchuan,we could not take them at face value as the descendants of the 500000 members of the Qin armies.” We have to investigate some of the historic sites and relics in Heyuan in order to examine its early history.
