Locality and Opportunity in the Minsheng Industrial Company：Lu Zuofu，1925-1937

摘要：This essay examines three significant junctures in the development of the Minsheng Industrial Company that illustrate the local origins of this enterprise. Lu Zuofu depended on relationships with local gentry and militarist regimes to found and grow his shipping business：Hechuan gentry were central to the early financing of the company，and agreements with minor militarists allowed its ships to traverse different garrison areas. Later，a crucial relationship with Liu Xiang （刘湘），the militarist in control of Chongqing，facilitated Minsheng’s expansion from a small local company to one that operated in national markets. These alliances grew out of one another and propelled Lu Zuofu and Minsheng up a hierarchy of place from Hechuan to the Jialing Gorges area and finally to Chongqing and national significance. Although Minsheng represents only one facet of Lu’s career，it was the linchpin of his work in Eastern Sichuan，providing both the economic basis for and determining the location and scope of his rural reconstruction projects.
